Jag Bhawan, M.D.
Dr. Bhawan is the Guido Majno Professor of Dermatology and Pathology, Head of the Dermatopathology Section, and Vice-Chair of Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine. He is also Director of the International Dermatopathology Training Program and of the Skin Pathology Laboratory of Boston University Dermatology. He also served as the director of the dermatopathology fellowship from its inception in 1987 until 2010, and again from 2014 onwards.
He received his M.D. degree from Maulana Azad Medical College in 1968 and a doctorate degree in Pathology in 1972 from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He trained in pathology and dermatopathology at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA from 1973 to 1975, prior to joining the University of Massachusetts Medical School as Head of Dermatopathology, and was made Assistant Professor of Pathology in July 1975.
He was promoted to the rank of tenured professor in 1985. He also trained in dermatology at the combined Boston University/Tufts Dermatology program from 1980 to 1983 before joining the faculty of Boston University in 1986.
Dr. Bhawan is board-certified in pathology, dermatology and dermatopathology. He has published over 225 original articles and written several book chapters. His research interests include melanocytic lesions, cutaneous aging and pigmentary disorders.
Dr. Bhawan serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Dermatopathology. He is the recipient of many awards, including the 1998 Best Teacher of the Year Award from the dermatology residents of the combined Boston-Tufts Universities Dermatology program and the 2012 Best Teacher Award given by the residents and international trainees in dermatology at Boston University. He is the recipient of the 2006 Walter Nickel Award for excellence in teaching of dermatopathology, and the 2008 Founders Award given by the American Society of Dermatopathology. Most recently, he was honored to become a member of The Chester S. Keefer, MD Society at Boston University School of Medicine for recognition of his generous contributions and commitment to the institution.
